“Just because we can do it all doesn’t mean we should.” – Megan Tobler
We’re living in a time where high-achieving women are ditching hustle culture and rewriting the rules—on their own terms. And today’s guest on the Empowered and Unapologetic podcast is proof that doing it differently doesn’t mean doing it wrong.
Megan Tobler, founder of Self Start Her, is a powerhouse for moms and women who are building their own businesses—without sacrificing themselves or their sanity in the process. In our conversation, she shares why women are leaving corporate life in droves, how to build a business that fits your life (not the other way around), and what it really looks like to juggle marriage, motherhood, and entrepreneurship without burning out.
Why Women Are Walking Away from Corporate
When Megan was laid off right after announcing her pregnancy—despite being a top-performing salesperson—it lit a fire. “Corporate wasn’t built for moms,” she said. “It forces you to choose: be a career woman or be present for your family.”
Spoiler: Megan chose both. But she made it work by redefining what “success” looks like and building a business model around her actual life, not some unrealistic ideal.
“You have to ask yourself—am I building a business that fits into my life, or am I forcing my life to fit into my business?” – Megan Tobler
From Panic Mode to Purpose
After 40 interviews in two weeks, Megan realized she didn’t want to go back to that world. Instead, she doubled down on her podcast, Self Start Her, and turned her vision into a community. She built her business in off-hours—naptimes, late nights, and the unpredictable pockets of motherhood. And she learned fast what so many women discover the hard way: burnout is real, and it happens fast when we try to prove we can do everything.
Her advice? Prioritize presence over perfection. And stop waiting to feel “ready.”
“The biggest misconception women have is thinking they need everything perfect before they start. Start before you’re ready. Perfectionism and imposter syndrome are dream killers.” – Megan Tobler
Mindset Shifts That Actually Work
Let’s talk real-life mindset shifts. Megan shared how letting go of her corporate title and embracing a new identity as a mom and business owner wasn’t just empowering—it was necessary.
The top 3 mindset changes she swears by?
- Releasing perfectionism – Mistakes will happen. Own them. Move on. The people who matter will stick with you.
- Asking for help – You don’t need to do it alone. Hire support, delegate, and stop micromanaging (even if your husband doesn’t load the dishwasher “correctly”).
- Honoring your energy – Megan works fewer hours than she did in corporate—but gets way more done. Why? Because she’s intentional. “Busy work is out the door,” she says.
Marriage & Motherhood in the Mix
Spoiler: juggling marriage, motherhood, and a mission-driven business isn’t cute Instagram magic—it’s work. Megan was candid about the tension it can create. Her husband works long hours, so she found herself pouring every ounce of leftover energy into her business. Until one day he said, “Hey… don’t forget about me.”
That was a wake-up call.
Now, they trade off parenting shifts on weekends, share their work goals, and prioritize one-on-one time—even if it’s messy and imperfect. That little shift? It changed everything.
I could relate so deeply to that. My husband once told me he was tired of “competing with my career.” And ouch—he was right. It took some serious conversations and a few tough love wake-up calls to realize we were operating like business partners, not life partners. And that’s not why we signed up for this life together.
The Power of Showing Up Messy
One of my favorite moments in our conversation? When Megan described her evolution from corporate identity to something even better: a connector. She realized she didn’t need to teach strategy—she needed to bridge the gap between women and the resources they need to thrive.
She owns that identity now, and it’s made all the difference. “Once I showed up authentically, everything blossomed.”
“I’m not everyone’s cup of tea—and that’s okay. The right people will connect with the real me.” – Megan Tobler
Megan’s 3 Non-Negotiables for Scaling Without Burnout
- Family first. Always. If it’s a choice between showing up to a Zoom or showing up for her son? Her son wins.
- Focused time blocks. Two hours of intentional work beats eight hours of busy work.
- Ditch perfection. Launch the thing. Mess it up. Fix it. Learn and move forward.
Ladies, if you’ve been waiting for the right time, this is your sign: start now. You already have what it takes. You don’t need another certification, a perfect business plan, or someone to give you permission. As Megan put it, you should’ve started yesterday.
If this episode fired you up, send it to a friend who needs to hear it. And remember—just because you’re doing it differently doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It means you’re doing it your way.
