Building confidence by doing
Gillian went from selling a $10 logo that she made while watching Netflix to launching her own successful design business. Even though it unfolded well, it was not an easy journey the whole way through.
I feel like it was a very tough transition especially because I grew up in a household where it’s not that we didn’t have money, but we just didn’t spend our money on anything. (Gillian Sarah)
Growing up in a very frugal family, Gillian had a tough time setting the prices for her business because she struggled to imagine that someone would pay for something that she wouldn’t.
I knew there was so much more I could do here, and I just need to get up the courage to do it because growing up being extremely frugal with things, I was under the impression that, “If I wouldn’t pay that much money for that, who else is going to pay that much money for that?” (Gillian Sarah)
Throughout the process, Gillian built her confidence by trying a little more each time.
She took smaller, future steps until she felt more comfortable, and then took the next one because she knew that what she wanted was on the other side of putting in the effort.
How running businesses impacts marriages
At a point in Gillian’s career, she was beginning to earn more income than her husband, and they had to work through that new dynamic for a while.
It did, for I think a few years, it did kind of affect us a bit … it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what was going on. (Gillian Sarah)
It took time for them to adjust, especially as her income continued to grow and his income stayed relatively the same. It went from him joking about her not having a “real” job to him starting to joke about leaving his work and going to work for her.
What the community of strong women needs
- Respect. Many women to work well and earn a significant amount of money are still ridiculed or teased about not having a “real job”.
I feel like we need a bit more respect in terms of like, yeah, we’re doing things that are controversial and they’re not the most “classic” jobs that people have ever had but they’re working. (Gillian Sarah)
- Respect and patience. The world needs to get comfortable with seeing women work, earn, and accumulate wealth and not have an issue with it, and that includes their partners.
The partners of ambitious women need to support them too and not tear down their ideas or ambitions just because it goes a little higher than theirs, or makes them question their personal work ethic.
- Community. Many highly successful women that earn a higher salary might struggle to speak with their friends that work in more standard industries without ostracizing themselves or upsetting their friends.
You need to be in a community of women that are in a similar position to you so that you can genuinely support, learn from, and encourage one another out of mutual respect and friendship, and not bother with jealousy.

Meet Veronica Cisneros
Hello, my name is Veronica Cisneros, I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Marriage Coach, Course Creator, Retreat Host, Mother of 3, married for 23 years, host of the Empowered and Unapologetic podcast, and owner of a group private practice called Outside The Norm Counseling.
A lot of couples struggle with setting aside intentional time to connect and communicate. They yearn for meaningful conversations that don’t lead to arguments.
1 month away from divorce, I realized I had to do something different. For years I had compromised myself to meet the needs of my husband and my child, I lost myself and was about to lose my marriage. After years of personal growth and self-reflection, I not only reclaimed my identity, and celebrated 23 years of marriage but also helped hundreds of couples transform their marriage from feeling like roommates to experiencing a deeper love.
I am on a mission to help couples reignite the fire by providing them with the skills to have the relationship they deserve.
