Ever felt like life has you stuck on repeat, caught in a loop of stress and overwhelm?

In this episode, I’m joined by the amazing Michelle Grosser—an attorney, pastor, nervous system expert, and life coach—who’s been there, too. Michelle and I dive deep into what it really takes to break free from those negative thought patterns and find peace within ourselves. We talk about everything from healing the nervous system and surrendering control to trusting in God’s plan and finding gratitude in the hard times. Michelle shares her own journey through burnout and reveals three powerful steps to help you start your own healing process. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this conversation!

Summary

  • Healing the nervous system is essential for overall well-being and can help alleviate physical and emotional symptoms of burnout.
  • Surrendering control and trusting in God’s plan can lead to personal growth and a deeper sense of peace.
  • Difficult situations and challenges can be opportunities for learning and growth.
  • Finding gratitude in the midst of adversity can help shift perspective and bring a sense of peace. Feeling safe and secure is essential for personal growth and breaking free from negative thought patterns.
  • Noticing somatic responses can help regulate the nervous system and improve overall well-being.
  • Prioritizing stillness and incorporating play are important for self-care and maintaining a healthy mindset.
  • Shifting from judgment to curiosity can improve relationships and foster self-awareness.

Lessons in Adversity: Finding Growth and Gratitude

When I first sat down with Michelle Grosser on my podcast, I was immediately struck by her deep understanding of the human experience, especially for high-achieving women like us. Michelle, an attorney, pastor, nervous system expert, and certified master life coach, has spent years unraveling the complexities of our minds and bodies, particularly how our nervous systems respond to the pressures we face.

She shared her story of managing a law practice while raising two young daughters. Like many of us, she found herself in a state of burnout that crept up unnoticed until it became overwhelming. “I was always like, there’s something else, and there’s something else,” she said, reflecting on the endless cycle of deadlines and demands. The physical symptoms of stress—gut issues, muscle tension, insomnia—became too significant to ignore, leading her to realize that her nervous system was in disarray.

In hearing Michelle’s story, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own journey. It’s easy to get caught up in the mindset of “just getting through this one more thing,” hoping that the next break will bring relief. But as Michelle so wisely pointed out, “God, why is this happening for me?” It’s a question we often overlook, focusing instead on why things are happening to us. The shift in perspective from victimhood to growth is subtle but transformative. There’s always a lesson in adversity if we’re willing to see it.

“It’s not about why this is happening to me, but why this is happening for me.”

Healing the Nervous System: A Path to Peace and Well-being

As Michelle dove deeper into understanding her body’s signals, she uncovered the profound impact that a dysregulated nervous system can have on overall well-being. Through her journey, she learned the importance of slowing down, connecting with her body, and embracing emotions rather than suppressing them.

Like Michelle, I too have found myself disconnected from my own body, caught up in the whirlwind of responsibilities and neglecting the signals it was sending me. Our bodies are wise; they know when we’re pushing too hard, and they communicate that wisdom through physical and emotional symptoms. Yet, many of us ignore these signs, attributing them to just another busy week.

The real work, as Michelle discovered, is in healing our nervous systems. It’s about more than just managing stress; it’s about reprogramming our minds and bodies to operate from a place of peace rather than chaos. “When I really started learning about my nervous system and really changing deep things like my mindset and paradigms,” she said, “it all started to heal and get better.”

“Our bodies are wise; they know when we’re pushing too hard.”

The Importance of Feeling Safe and Secure

One of the most significant insights Michelle shared was the necessity of feeling safe and secure in our environments—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Without this foundation, we’re constantly operating in survival mode, making it nearly impossible to truly thrive.

As women who are often juggling multiple roles—mother, professional, partner—we tend to prioritize everyone else’s needs above our own. We tell ourselves that we’ll rest after the project is done or once the kids are older, but that time never seems to come. Michelle’s journey reminded me of the importance of prioritizing our own sense of safety and well-being. This isn’t just about self-care in the traditional sense; it’s about creating a life where we don’t just survive, but truly feel safe to thrive.

“You can’t pour from an empty cup. Prioritize your well-being so you can pour into others from a place of abundance.”

Breaking Free from Negative Thought Patterns

Lastly, Michelle and I discussed the power of mindset in healing. The stories we tell ourselves—about our worth, our capabilities, our limitations—can either keep us stuck or propel us forward. For Michelle, much of her healing came from challenging these narratives, particularly those rooted in fear and insecurity.

This resonated deeply with me. I’ve spent much of my life battling the belief that I have to do everything myself, that trusting others (or even God) means losing control. But as Michelle wisely noted, “I believe, but help me with my unbelief.” It’s a reminder that faith—whether in ourselves, others, or a higher power—isn’t about being certain all the time. It’s about being willing to let go, even just a little, and trust that we’re supported.

“Faith isn’t about being certain all the time; it’s about being willing to let go and trust.”

As I continue on my own journey, I’m grateful for the wisdom shared by women like Michelle. Her story is a powerful reminder that our greatest struggles often lead to our most profound growth. By learning to listen to our bodies, prioritize our safety, and challenge the stories that keep us stuck, we can find peace and well-being even amidst life’s chaos. And as Michelle’s journey shows, we don’t have to do it alone. There’s strength in community, in sharing our stories, and in lifting each other up as we navigate the challenges of life.

Meet Michelle Grosser

Michelle Grosser is a law professor turned master life coach and host of the podcast “Calm Mom” with big dreams, growing kiddos, and the world’s sweetest husband. She’s passionate about teaching women how to regulate their nervous systems and supporting them in overcoming anxiety, overwhelm, and burnout.

Michelle’s mission is to help women kick mom guilt to the curb, say goodbye to exhaustion, and unlock the stress cycle. She knows firsthand the pressure of trying to do it all—running a busy law firm by day, teaching law students by night, and juggling the demands of motherhood and marriage. But through her journey, she discovered that striving for perfection and doing everything for everyone else was leading her down the path of burnout.

She made strategic decisions to change her habits, quit the toxic mindsets, let go of limiting beliefs, and set boundaries to protect what mattered most. By simplifying her life and setting up vital systems at home, Michelle found the peace she had been missing for so long.

Now, Michelle is on a mission to teach high-achieving women the simple steps they need to reprioritize their lives, renew their energy, and reset their mindsets. Through her coaching, she helps women embrace the rhythms of motherhood, set important boundaries, and fiercely protect their non-negotiables. Michelle’s message is clear: it’s time to start living fully and joyfully again.
