Mistakes high-achieving women can accidentally make in marriages
One of the things about being a high-achieving woman is that you are driven. You know what you need to do, you can see the path ahead of you, and you are ready to get to where you want to go.
The danger however is that when you are so dedicated to the goal and laser-focused on what needs to get done, you can accidentally ignore potentially big hangups.
Unfortunately, when you’re so driven, you’re willing to ignore some red flags that come up, because you’re like, “That’s not a problem”. We think we can solve it all, and sometimes we can’t solve somebody else’s problems. (Alison Jacobson)
The biggest piece of advice that Alison can give to other high-achieving women is that when it comes to romantic partners, what you see is what you get. If you notice red flags going into a relationship, you are not going to change it.
So, notice the red flags and then put up any necessary boundaries.
How your challenges can shape you
Of course, when life is difficult it makes you want to pull away.
Suffering is not easy, but when you handle it and face it, there are often pieces of knowledge and wisdom that you can learn from it going forward.
I have lived through every horrific thing most people could think of, and I lived through it. So many times people have said, “I can’t imagine going through what you did!”. Well, neither did I, but I did! You never know how strong you are until you don’t have a choice. (Alison Jacobson)
When you face your fears and decide to try, even when you are unsure or afraid, you then get to see exactly what you’re made of. You get to decide how you choose to live your life, in the good and the bad, and who you want to be in these crucial moments.
Are you someone who pulls away and runs from the problems, or are you someone who faces them, asks for help, and looks for what can be done?
Alison’s four Cs blueprint
- Courage: you’ve got to have the courage to step out of your comfort zone and that’s hard for your ego to do because it doesn’t like being uncomfortable.
- Clarity: you need to be crystal clear about what you want so that you can accurately measure your success or progress towards it.
You have to be crystal clear about what you want because if you’re not, how in God’s name are you going to achieve it? How are you going to set those goals? Be clear on what you want. (Alison Jacobson)
- Confidence: get rid of your limiting beliefs that talk you down and away from pursuing your desires. Your confidence will keep you safe from impostor syndrome and fear, so write your fears down so that you can pinpoint them whenever they come up.
- Consistency: keep at it! The only time you quit is when you stop, so keep going, because every effort contributes to your success.

Meet Veronica Cisneros
Hello, my name is Veronica Cisneros, I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Marriage Coach, Course Creator, Retreat Host, Mother of 3, married for 23 years, host of the Empowered and Unapologetic podcast, and owner of a group private practice called Outside The Norm Counseling.
A lot of couples struggle with setting aside intentional time to connect and communicate. They yearn for meaningful conversations that don’t lead to arguments.
1 month away from divorce, I realized I had to do something different. For years I had compromised myself to meet the needs of my husband and my child, I lost myself and was about to lose my marriage. After years of personal growth and self-reflection, I not only reclaimed my identity, and celebrated 23 years of marriage but also helped hundreds of couples transform their marriage from feeling like roommates to experiencing a deeper love.
I am on a mission to help couples reignite the fire by providing them with the skills to have the relationship they deserve.
